Ruth Lee manikins create a realistic challenge for trainees at the Maritime Skills Academy

Navigation Menu

A fire is always a serious emergency situation  – but what happens if there is a fire onboard a ship or other offshore facility? Would your team have the capability, confidence and skills needed to ensure that the emergency does not escalate out of control?

Thankfully, there are training providers who can provide courses for managing risk and tackling fires in the offshore and shipping sectors, such as the Maritime Skills Academy. Based in Dover, Kent, it is a family owned company with thirty years’ experience within the international Marine Industry.

Specialising in safety and survival training for all ranks of crew member aboard any type of ship or boat, the Maritime Skills Academy list clients such as international cruise companies, super yacht operators, UK Border Force, renewable energies companies and international ferry operators.

Darryl Cooper, Marine Training Manager at the Maritime Skills Academy sent us some photos of their training and said,

“One of the major aspects of safety training for onboard a ship is Fire Awareness and Fire Fighting. We use our purpose built fire module to simulate multiple situations which may occur at sea. Multiple classes of fire are set as well as simulated scenarios, enclosed space entry and very importantly, casualty extraction.
We utilise three Ruth Lee adult dummies and one toddler sized manikin. These dummies are durable, allowing us to be very flexible and creative with our casualty positioning. Fred, Dave and Tim can be found relaxing in their burning bunk, taking a break in the purser’s office, piloting helicopters, hanging around on the stairs or even sheltering from the smoke inside a cupboard.
As well as maritime training we assist commercial work site fire teams in their training and exercise simulation working with groups from nuclear power stations, renewable energy companies and manufacturing plants.
Whatever the challenge we try to make scenarios realistic, worthwhile and different every time a delegate attends. The Ruth Lee rescue training manikins ensure that we can achieve this.”
