They often say "Never work with children or animals" - sometimes a manikin will be a far better option!
When performing paediatric moving and handling training it is often impractical to expect a child to ‘help out’ and therefore a small manikins can be very useful.
At Ruth Lee we always advocate the use of manikins in people handling training as the risk of injury is far less than using a live volunteer. We manufacture manikins in a range of sizes and weights, from a 5kg baby, right the way up to a 260kg bariatric casualty!
Gary Knipe, Manual Handling Consultant from Ergoway uses smaller sized manikins to deliver practical training courses and said,
“We use toddler manikins in our paediatric moving and handling one day course, which has lots of interaction and practical learning. The manikins is useful because children are not always that keen to partake in a full day’s course! The manikin is used for a lot of simulated transfers and lets us teach valuable manual handling skills.”
